Thanking automan

My daily travel rituals involves :

1. going to a nearby railway station,Mulund, by an autorikshaw or walk

2. local train up to Ghatkopar station

3. take bus or autorick up to my Marol office.

Very often I go by auto and charges as per its meter varies from Rs. 30 to Rs.45 depending on how fast the tampered fare meter of that auto is set. It there is heavy traffic or jam it can easily go up to Rs.50-55. Once I have even paid Rs.75 fo the same distance. That's okay.

I had reasons to believe that fair charges are around Rs.30 to Rs.35.

It happened this that one day a meter of an auto clocked only Rs.28. I was concerned for the the poor driver; why should he suffer on his legimate right of earning. I gave him Rs. 30 and told him to check his meter saying that his meter is running slow unlike all other autos. He humbly replied that his meter was in fact correctly set and tested as per RTO norms. I couldn't believe this. He said that he was not bothered if his tradesmen are earning more by incorrectly setting their meters. He was contended person and could sleep well.

I was taken aback by this revealation. I gave back Rs.2 that he was trying to return me as a tip which he accepted saying," that's your (my) khushi (pleasure)".

Portable Social Networks: Take Your Friends with You

Many times you get bogged down when you have to type in data again and again as you register at various sites, mainly the social networks. It happens that your dear friend has sent yoy info about new networking site dedictaed to a particular interest, may be travel related, and you feel like registering there, But alas !... you stop in the middle as you know the pain of entering the same data once more. Agreed, you have been done it and doing it so many time Not again ! .. you may think now; enough is enough ! Is it happenning in this modern world...that you need to enter the same data again and again as you move across different sites? Why can't somebody remember that ?
If you are with me let's go and see the latest development here :
I must mention here that I got this link from one of my newer friend Kris Rackham on Ecademy.
Hope you will enjoy it too!

Dr. Shivaramakrishna : Lifestyle Management

Rtn. Dr. Shivaramakrishana. RC Chembur was the guest speaker at our weekly Rotary meeting dated 25th July,2008. Dr. Shiva, as he is called afectionately, gave an excellent speech on LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT.

We present few salient points from his speech.

Today relatively younger persons are succumbing to certain diseases that were hereto were earlier known to have affected aged people only.

Blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are commonly know diseases or disorders that are related to one's lifestyle ….much attributed to present lifestyle where physical activity is reduced due to modern day comforts on one hand and a changing eating habit on the other hand. Rich, processed food has also brought in increasing level of stress. It should be remembered that stress is our response, physical or mental to a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. Again, in today's world stress is more due to more and more emphasis on performance.

Body is continuously aging and no one can stop that, but we can regress progression of aging by lifestyle management.

Dr. Shiva gave the following formula, which he called D A R E S :

D

Diet

Proper Diet-Indian Thali is considered to be the best balanced diet offering all the minerals & vitamins that are required by our body, whereas fast food or junk food that is more popular among younger generation may rob your body of the requisite constituents for your body.

A

Activity

Implies physical activity which is very much neglected in today's fast paced, facilities laden life. He stressed on brisk walk, jogging or any other cardiovascular exercise on regular basis.

R

Relaxation

Stress today is mainly mental stress which remains constantly. Stress is an ability to perceive implied threat. Therefore it is needed to keep proper balance between Work & Life. Relaxation in any form that soothes your senses, relieves or reduces your tension or stress is very much important. Light music, hobbies that divert your mind is recommended. Involvement in volunteering like in Rotary work also gives much needed fillip to your mind.

E

Empathy

Empathy as different from sympathy is caring for others by putting yourself in others shoes. Compassion or Empathy takes you to think beyond "I" or "me". It is the ability to experience the world from another perspective, often the perspective of another person. Lack of empathy leads to poor communication and a failing to understand others which may anger you. That's bad for your health. While we cannot control other's thoughts, feelings or behaviors, we most certainly can increase our empathy skills : listening, self-awareness and acceptance.

S

Spirituality

Being spiritual mean remaining positive, optimistic, supporting worthy causes, remaining cheerful. In fact Various practices associated with the path of spirituality—meditation, breathing exercises, physical exercises (yogakriyas/yoga practices), and practice of positive thinking make one physically and mentally better equipped to manage stress.

Apologies to Mr. Lawrence

Prelude:

(on Ecademy )

22-Apr-08 6:49pm
Hi ,

Visited your excellent profile.

I'd like to add you to my network on Ecademy.

-Prashant

----

22-04-2008

So Prashant .... why do you want to add me to your network .... also what is so great about my profile?Laurence

PS - Please at least put my name in to show you actually read my profile.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Laurence,

Sorry for a delayed response.

My sincere apologies.

Now few issues:

1. Yes, it was a mistake on my part that I didn't put your name. I accept that and I can understand your feelings over it. Sorry...

2. Even without reading your profile I could have put your name and I guess you would have believed it.

3. What is so great about your profile: Mr. Laurence, there are few things in my life that do not form part of my profile on any networking site. I was a student of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in a prestigious institution.I dropped out of the program, but liking for the subject and the fact that I had given up engineering degree program was haunting me. (BTW, Indians attach a lot of importance to education and an engg. degree then, some 25 years back, was looked upon as passport to the road of success & riches). In a wilderness that followed, took me to obtain a Ham (Amateur) Radio licence; thought of becoming a Marine Radio Officer; tried doing many courses.

In the process I obtained many degrees but could not forget my passion for engineering, technology in general and communication and telecommunication in particular. My present job has got nothing to do with communication/telecommunication technology but the subject has remained at the core of my heart.I became a gadget freak...became an audiophile, owned dedicated audio processors, owned all the formats of audio & video cassettes player/recorders.I realised that although I couldn't do engineering, definitely I can be an end user and simply use fruits of the the technologies that I earlier fancied working on. Do you know that my house has three occupants,2 internet users but 3 computers ( a desktop & 2 laptops- all for personal & not business use), 5 internet connections ( 3 broadband,1 datacard,1 usb data modem ) that has unlimited download? My funda is straight, come what may be at least one internet connection should be working. (Again, to appreciate that one has go through a society that faces frequent power cuts & interuption in telco services).

In this light when I saw you are connected with telephony, the internet, fundraising (again, I am a Rotarian), I thought you have an interesting profile.I know that I may not subscribe to your telephony or other telecom services; I may not be of any help in your fundraising activities ( I donate to Roatary International,.my local Rotary club and few organisations dealing with old-age,cancer,children, etc.), even then I may like a personality that is behind such profile.

4. I received a lot of messages from fellow networkers. My current status was also showing that " I started answering mails from my Inbox...." . I could read yours today only and after reading your message I thought this needs to be addressed on a priority basis.

5. I would like to thank you for providing me this opportunity to write on something that I have avoided so far and now should be a part of my blog and may be my profile.

6. I have tried to explain you what I felt when I saw your profile.

I am fascinated more by people, of diverse culture, their viewpoints, etc. As correctly pointed out by one of the Ecademists, most of the profiles are blatant sales pitch. But not always. And there are some others - watchers - who have nothing on offer to sell ! They are probably intrigued by the diversity (in terms of skills, attitudes and perceptions) of people in the world and like to see people with interesting profiles.

Thanks for the patience.

Best regards,

Prashant Koli

Physical Excercise

My physician has advised me to take a brisk walk and not do weight training exercises due to some of my health related problems. She added that I take a walk during evening also besides the morning walk.

Earlier I was not a regular walker. But since 22nd April, 2008, I am very much regular, as far as my walking exercise is concerned. I ensure that I have atleast 1, 5 to 6 km walk. So, on most of the days I walk briskly for 10 to 12 km.

It has really helped me in weight reduction and other situations.

On 21st april 2008, my physician's weighing machine was winking at me with 90 kg and today morning weighing machine at my home was smiling with cool 81 kg.

I know that my target should be 72-73 kg, given my height, 171 cm (and a broad frame), but why not celebrate this small victory!

The Dream

A man lay on his bed at the end of his life waiting to die.
His dream came to pay his last respects and bid farewell to the man who had never used it.
As it entered the room the man looked down in shame.
"Why did you not realise me?" the dream asked.
"Because I was afraid," the man said.
"Afraid of what," said the dream.
"I was afraid I would fail."
"But haven't you failed by not attempting to use me?".
"Yes I did, but I always thought there would be tomorrow."
"You Fool!" said the dream" Did it never occur to you that there was only ever today?
The moment that you are in right now?
Do you think that now that death is here that you can put it off until tomorrow?".
"No". Said the man, a tear gently rolling down his cheek.
The dream was softer now, because it knew that there were two types of pain, the pain of discipline and the pain of regret, and while discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs pounds.

Then the dream leant forward to gently wipe away the tear and said, " You need only have taken the first step and I would have taken one to meet you, for the only thing that ever separated us was the belief in your mind that you couldn't have me".Then they said goodbye and they both died.

First Goa Trip...SBI (1981-82)

First Goa Trip...SBI (1981-82)

I quite vividly remember my first Goa trip. My colleagues, peer group from State Bank of India decided to go to Goa. We thought it would be a good idea to travel by rail and bus.

We had reached Goa and were put up at Calangute Beach, at Hotel Avazado, our bank's official guest house. We were allotted a room and one of us anxiously asked the care-taker of the hotel if a girl from our branch, who had married few days ago and was to go to Goa, was still there. We were promptly told that she had left a day ago and had stayed in the room next to one which was allotted to us.

That was it! We had a lot of fun discussing what might have happened in the next room, how they would have mate for the first time, how he might have begged and how she might have refused, what were the sounds heard by the four walls of the room. The whole experience was a hilarious and fun.

I also remember that we had traveled up to Miraj, near Kolhapur, from V.T. and from there we took a meter-gauge train. I remember meter-gauge train as a somewhat lean replica of a broad-gauge train which was different than a narrow-gauge train that we take to Matheran.

At Londha, we entered in to Karnataka and thereafter at some place in to Goa and finally got down at Madgaon in the late afternoon. We had a lunch at Madgaon in a small hotel where the food tasted somewhat like a malwani/gomantak style. But there was a handful of serving of some kind of a small deep-fried fish served as a chuttney. This was not seen by us in Mumbai then. Quite a satisfactory experience!

We took up a bus to Panjim. Bus operators would not leave the buses unless they are fully packed with no space for an ant to enter! But the fares were very reasonable...that's what we always wanted then.

I don't remember much about Panaji on that evening when we came from Madgaon. What I remember now is a jetty at Panaji where Mumbai-Goa ships would dock, buildings that were distinctly different from what we used to see in Mumbai and a vegetarian dinner that we took at one of Kamat's restaurant. Kamat restaurants are almost same everywhere (even today). And therafter we proceeded to Calangute.

One day we travelled to South Goa to see churches and on the next day to north Goa. I do not remember much, from this trip, what we saw there except that Goan churches were fantastic and temples were more serene (as there was less of crowd we used to see in Mumbai/Shirdi and other places even then...that’s 25 years ago).

We drank lot of beer on the Goa trip as the same was available for a dirt. I really didn't like the Goan or Konkani food....I must correct myself, the one with heavy Portuguese stamp...and not the Goan curries, which we savored a lot.... that we ordered, probably a pomfret..a boiled and garnished with finely chopped vegetables and some sauces. We in fact felt like omitting...it was smelling horrible, thought it was not properly cooked. So we ate a lot of cheese (eating food like cheese and butter wasn't a health problem then for many of us, I believe).

Two of our vegetarian friends, however, would go hysterical as we were merrying drinking beer and feasting on other non-veg dishes. So they would order any weird snacks...and as it happened on many occasion that the seemingly veg food would smell like a non-veg dish in Goa. One had ordered a Cadbury chocolate when we were drinking and when asked why he was ordering it, he replied that since he was contributing equal money and was not drinking beer or eating non-veg he felt like helping himself. We said," God, save your child!". Yes, we also recognised his right to enjoy every penny that he shared in the contribution.

I also remember that we were discussing miniaturization of many products. a friend citing his neighbor who was in AT & T in the USA, said that old rotary, circular dial phone had given a way to new push-button type phone and the bulky 'Black-Box' was on the way out giving a way to slicker push-button phones. He further claimed that there was a saturation of the technology and no further reduction in size or miniaturization in case of phone was possible. After his entire neighbor was there in the dreamland called the US of America and how can we not believe him. We also affirmed his stories. And we now what has happened and from our experience we now don't like to say in any concrete manner where we may head as far as the technology is concerned.

One of my maternal uncles was a habitual drinker. I had purchased 4 bottles of liquor for him. I remember how much my older mama was upset when he came to knew that I had brought liquor for his younger sibling. Finally I had to surrender those bottles and what happened to them I have never realized. My younger uncle did not, however, forgot to thanks me saying that he was happy that somebody cared for him.

Reviews without reading a books

Reviews or Presentations without reading books

Recently at a local Rotary Club meeting there was a speech and presentation on "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps". I remembered that there was a book by the same name, and Google tells me that, it was written by Allan Pease and Barbara Pease. I learnt that the book describes how men and women think, perceive and behave differently. I must say that the small reviews at on Amazon.com were interesting enough to entice interest in the subject.

The speaker at the Rotary Club was using a PowerPoint presentation. A the outset, we were told, by the speaker, that the presentation that he was using was not his own but was a copyright of somebody else....and he showed at the part of some remarks, on the slide. We were further told that that somebody had also used the presentation of some other person. The presentation contained only text of salient features of finding of Pease duo and the same is widely and freely available on the internet.

I was amazed why was it called a copyright then? What was under copyright? Was it the text? Or was the process of first copying of the text on to the slide of PPT? Or the second copy that the speaker brought along was a work of copyright...that is to say that no further copying is allowed?

I seemed to get more confused. Why the speaker did insist that it was a copyright?

Well, the answer seems to be that I may not recognize my responsibility in protecting the intellectual property of others but I would insist that others need to follow copyright of my material, which itself has been obtained by infringement, stealing.

I do not intend to review the presentation. However, I asked the speaker if he had read the original book and he said that he hadn't. It was good that almost nobody, from the audience present there, had read the book; nobody asked him probing questions. The questions asked were sort of " how can you say this....?" and to which the presenter would reply, 'those are not my views but are of that author...?"

One of the Rotarian opined that these days nobody has a time in the world to read books however interested one may be in reading and hence it was okay to read review or somebody present the review even if the reviewer might present his review from the another review or from reading the executive summaries that are available on the internet. And thus the speaker was helping the club and its members.

And yes, he was correct. The whole internet generation is doing that. One of my friends sent me a request to view his picture album on Great Wall of China. Quite enthralled I opened it only to find a link taking me to a site where there was a huge collection of images and photographs from sites including Google Images, Flickr and Picasa. Not long ago I heard one such talk / presentation on 'Conquering the Everest"...just 2 days before Sir Hillary died. The presenter had gathered all important photos and information from the internet but presented it effectively.

Bottom-line is : present effectively even if you go to the extreme of calling for a copyright of your work when you have unashamedly not recognized other’s copyright.

Ang mardan : Maalishwalas of chowpatty

maalishwalas or masseurs of Mumbai

Long before 'massage' as a form of treatment became popular due to growth of Health centers in Mumbai, there were two types of massagers : massage offered by bhaiyyas on the streets of Mumbai or Chowpatty and then there were ( and they are still there) those Massage Centers , where massage was for namesake only but they would offer many value added services. The second type of massage centers still make their presence felt in the classified section of all major & minor newspapers claiming to offer ‘fresh stock’ and we know that the girls there are train in offering services more than just a plain massage.

My mind goes back to those male masseurs who used to wander around the streets and by lanes of Mumbai-mostly in South Mumbai during evening/night. They would offer head massage or body massage. In head massage they would put strong smeling oil and would massage your head vigourously. I quite vividly remember those days when we would get a head massage occasionally, down below our chawls. He would do a ‘chop’ on your head with his fists, ‘pull’ our ears to make a ‘click’ sound, ‘break’ our neck and then do knuckles, and finally ‘beating’ our back.

This type of massage, I believe, is quite different from the massage that you get in modern Health clubs, where it is a sort of soothing massage with an aim to relax muscles (that’s what people say) whereas the massage that I have been talking about is a hard massage given by hard-strokes and you would derive pleasure out of pain.

There were masseurs operating at Chowpatty offering the same hard massage but they must have been different. Much later, with the advent of the internet, we have learnt more about these people. But we would hear, with interest, from the older boys, that these male masseurs at Chowpatty would offer you to massage private parts also. And we were thrilled, horrified and ashamed, all together.

Morning Glory

Isn’t that a lovely scene?
That of a landscape? A picture ? Or that of weather?
That can’t be behold in,
The camera of eyes that is aging.

The foggy sky across the skyscrapers,
Dews making merry on the tree branches,
Yellow flowers piggybacking on green leaves.

A narrow lane sparse with bypassers,
Birds flying out of their nests from trees,
Chirping of birds mixed with,
Rumbles of buses plying across.

And lo! The sun also wants to be part of this ,
Adding his splash with his ambassadors.

And me, sitting across the window sill,
Confronting with nature,
In as yet slow pace of life,
Knowing fully well that it won’t last for long.

SRK... a fading hero ?

They say that Indian youths dream about SRK and Dipps...

I have a latest update...
...as a thing forthcoming...

Whenever my 13 year young daughter sees SRK she refers him as "budda"... ( old )

I believe that this is a precursor to an impending future...that SRK may not be no. 1 in the dreams of Indian youths, in when these 12-15 years something will be termed as youths...

Taare Zameen Par

This is not a review....

Whosoever might have walked away with awards and rewards,
I must say that acting & perfoemance of,
All the stars was shining...

Father portrayed by ... who cares for the name...
...from my reflection....shows all the anxiety of living in a modern competitive world...
And the mother seemed to have been torn between father and son...a hapless....

If I were some kind of an authority I would not only make it a Tax-free,
but I would give few bucks as an incentive for every ticket sold and that sum collected would go to a charity... organizations and people working for kids...

Don't think that TZP is about the Dyslexia cases....

I was stunned while watching the movie...
...it is about you and me... and kids and family....
...tension, anxiety of a modern age is taking it's toll when we are after our kids to excel, show performance, while forgettig to realise that every child (for that matter a person) is unique and he needs his own space to breathe in before he can take a flight... to an achievement...

I decide to become an Entrepreneur

Rottenning in my job which offers no scope for further advancement I have always been thinking of starting a new business. My wife is always terrified by my mere thought of giving up a job which offers comfortable living if not a lavish living. Well, this time my son came to my rescue. He consoled his mom saying my euphoria is not going to last for long. It seemed like an old story, I thought,....I will have to give up my dream to become one such successful entrepreneur.

I was in my low when my son came and offered me to help. He suggested me that why not search for an innovative business idea. I seemed to like the keyword: Innovation, innovative ideas, innovative ways of doing the old things. Bitten by the word "Innovation and it's close encounters I started hitting all likely keywords into Google.

I came across many great ideas which initially thought to be innovative but I wanted to hit upon a unique idea that had not been tried earlier. Sooner I realized that the Internet is full of old tried ideas and it became clear that I resign to old style of going in hibernation for some time for thinking of an idea. My wife generally is averse to my idea of going alone to some nearby spots like Khandala or Lonavala for confining myself in solitude that may help me in concentrate and think. One reason, I know if it's true, I may think of other women...that's obvious....no, no...not that I am going to thing of other women it is obvious a married woman to think in such way if her man goes out and stays at such romantic places....so my son comes again to my rescue..."Dad, why not go to our old flat"...well I must tell you that our small old flat is just 150 meters away. I liked ingenuity of my son who he is trying to help me out at the same time he is trying to protect his mother.

It was decided that we place a new A.C . and so it was done. My wife did not forget to meet our old neighbors and entrusted them a job of keeping a watch on me...nevertheless neighbors always volunteer to do such work, don't they?

It happened that I was reading Paulo Coelho, consuming bottled water and new news channels were blaring about the pollution, particularly Air Pollution in cities of India. Suddenly something happened and I knew that the whole universe was conspiring to show me a path injecting omens....

...if there is a packaged or bottled water, why not packaged air ?

I have come from the age where we were taught that water and air are the free gifts of nature and therefore never thought that we need to pay for them. But see the providence....we are happily paying for bottled water. I understand that there is a problem with water...that the water is not available everywhere...and that water even if available it should be potable. But the same can't be said about air...the air is available every where...even in the desert of Sahara...in africa's jungle and draught-stricken districts of India. So why should anybody buy a packaged air?

That was the big question....but if we could make people buy packaged air nothing like that, I thought.

One fine morning I summoned my son to find out if there is packaged air available. My son probed me, "are you serious?". I said," yes".

"Then please allow me some time to do a serious research for what you think is a great idea. But I need keys of our old flat". Anyway it was a long time that I was going to our old flat for thinking in solitude and even our old neighbours had given up keeping watch on me as one of our neighbor quipped that nothing interesting was happening in our flat.

" No problem, I said and give him the keys".

( Develop this sub-plot later...)

Son came back saying that packaged air in fact was available in some advanced countries, it is used for blowing dust.

"well, nobody is going to buy my packaged air simply to blow dust"

My question was why they needed a tinned bottle of air, they could have used blower or vacuum cleaner instead. I was told by my dutiful son that there are circumstances in which you need to use compressed air packed from a can. I asked him to probe further if people in foreign countries were using air the way we use bottled water.

"No, but governments there release pure oxygen in cities that have been polluted above a certain norm, and the money for this comes from tax collected from polluting industries.

I know that the governments here won't be releasing oxygen in the air in polluting cities let alone from the pollution taxes that they collect. They simply do not have a habit of doing so and even if they were willing to do so they will have to release oxygen through out the India, which you all will agree would be cumbersome besides stunningly expensive. I decided to shelve my idea because Indian state governments would not be buying oxygen for releasing in the air and also if they decide to do so there are already people / companies offering such services.

"Don't loose your heart Dad", my son continues " you still make the people buy the packaged air if people feel that there is a shortage of air or pure air. See how Reliance Energy declared that they can charge the differential rates during the deemed load shedding....the rates could be much higher...like mobile phone
plans...."

My question is : could there be such period when you choose not
to breathe....or breathe less air....

"the question is of quality air", my son quipped "so make cities
filled with less of pure air and then induce people to buy canned air".

"making cities more polluting?"

"No, no….only that people should feel that their cities are more polluting. You know Dad that these days there is a more and more emphasis placed on performance and so you can make them believe that they indeed need to inhale more of pure air for peak performance. It's not the question of true or false but the question is of believing and if they start believing your story may be people will buy it …canned air ….from you…that it is the question of M & A "

" Merger & Acquisition?" I was surprised. I had no inkling of such idea in my financial training.

"No, no….it's Marketing & Advertising", he quipped.

"Oh, that's alright but how people will use canned air?"

"That's a real question…we need to research on that. Using it as an oxygen mask would be too much embarrassing & inconvenient…may be as an inhaler?

Well idea is progressing in right direction, I thought.

"Will anybody buy my idea?" I asked.

"I don't know", said my son.

"I shall pay you half the profit if you help me", I retorted "in actually selling the product."

"Dad, you know I am a consultant type….I can suggest you ways in identifying resources, market, technology & make reports, prepare presentations. And you want to become an entrepreneur, so I am afraid that the whole responsibility & headache of implementation is yours."

"But you know Dad I am your son and would not like you to fail miserably like the most start-ups. Well you know dad that the latest research show that performance depends more on energy levels of a person and not on his age, sex or education…so I can get you at least one customer …the first one very quickly so that you get a head start.

"You yourself would be your first customer", son quipped.

My P2 speech: Leapfrogging...

Leapfrogging as a Strategy

Rottenning in my job which offers no scope for further advancement, I have always been thinking starting a new or second career.

Not very long ago I was visiting my old place of residence during Holi. I saw kids playing a game, in which one boy stoops down and others jump over him...
I immediately recognized the game...Leapfrogging...

Leapfrogging literally means bypassing a stage or stages or processes in doing certain things but generally it is used in the context of technology.

The great visionary & scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai thus pointed out that India being latecomer in many areas of technology, it had an advantage because it can leapfrog through the intermediate stages of technology.

We also know that till some 10 years back telephone density in India was very poor…just 1 telephone for 100 people….and that was the period of wired networks which we lacked. But see where India is …in absolute terms almost 300 millions telephone connections by end of this March…which will make India no. 2 in the world in absolute no. of telephones…wired or wireless ,mobile phones. …and we need not think about the sunk cost of vast wired network…we did not have that much in the first place and yet we leapfrogged through the stages to attain no. 2 position in the world.

Sometimes leapfrogging may be unintentional….the case in point is IBM…as you know IBM was thrown out of our country in 1977…so we did not have a legacy of mainframes, unlike in the USA, and when IT revolution took off the mainframe became obsolete…it was the age of PCs…and we did not face the problem of old and expensive mainframe computers.

Take another example where middlemen were eliminated in a co-operative movement…and producers were benefitted…I am talking about Amul…the largest producer of milk in the world.

In fact we can think in terms of applying leapfrogging as a strategy to solve problems and find new solutions.

If corruption is traced to bureaucratic red tape, we can look at rules or procedures to see to what extent rules and procedures can be eliminated, bypassed, or leapfrogged.

If you feel like stuck in a mid way…may be in your career thinking that you are being denied promotion or raises…think again…there are ways…
Use leapfrogging as a strategy…

Why think of promotion or rise when you can think of becoming CEO of your own company….or your own life...

If you are being nagged continuously by your boss…you can thing of becoming his boss…what not possible?...well, you can purchase a controlling stake in your company and become the ultimate boss…

…you may ask me what I am going to do…

..as you may know that I am in ministry of finance and when I get irritated by my boss I actually feel sorry that in Govt. offices I won’t be able to become boss of my present boss as all promotions are based on seniority only…

…so it’s my wildest of dream that it is more feasible for me to become Finance Minister of India and thus become ultimate boss of all my bosses.

What about you?...I am curious to know that…

Reflections

Just now when I was reading the words of Paulo Coelho, about his different worlds of :

(a) ‘a lot of people’, and (b) ‘no people’, I was stunned to find similarities in Paulo and I; I could not help to immediately relate it to me.

And thus flowed:

For much of the thinking is
The same thinking,

For much of the feeling is
The same feeling,

For much of the wants are
The same wants,

For much of the aspirations are
The similar aspirations,

For much of the observations are
The same observations,

For much of the philosophy is
The same philosophy.

For much of the desires are
The similar desires,

For much of the ways are
The same ways,

For much of the vision is
The same vision,

For much of the life is
The similar life,

I was wondering if there is another Prashant in Brazil
Or another Paulo in Mumbai.

For much of the Paulo is
The similar Prashant.

firing in the bush

We have been sitting like carpenters, masons, with all our tools on a high street waiting for a customer to arrive....the only difference being our tools are called high tech or knowlege tools.

For example, my family has a laptop with (unlimited usage) data card, another laptop with a mobile modem; a desktop with high speed connections from 2 different vendors, webcams, printer & scanner, GPRS on 2 phones, and what not.

The question is where is the content? what are we doing? are we expert enough to offer a solution (except acting as a data-entry operator or secretary or typist)? or create a product? a concept that can be explored further and will build network around you?

I think we do not have enough subject domain knowledge and instead we are simply firing in the bush. These are the gadgets that we have gathered in this digital age whereby we spend all our free time instead of spending it with our family.

A LION amongst Rotarians?

I am a Rotarian and as you may be aware that there is Lions International, another large service organization. Rotarians use 'Rtn' as a title In front of their names whereas members of Lions International use " Lion" in front of their names.

When I started taking serious interest in LinkedIn and was looking forward to increase my no. of connections I saw there were many LIONs on LinkedIn. I was intrigued why there were many Lions and hardly any Rotarian. Well, my search took me to those LIONs - LinkedIn Open Networkers -and in the process I became a LION, LinkedIn Opene Networker, myself.

When one of my fellow Rotarians saw me using LION somewhere in my name he was shocked; he called me up and asked me how can I become LION along with being a Rotarian.

Lions International and their members are getting undue benefit due to this. Anyway, Good luck to Lions!
